Embarking on a weekend getaway to British Columbia, my wife and I sought to leave behind the hustle and bustle of Toronto. Our trip, filled with unforgettable experiences, included vibrant cityscapes and awe-inspiring natural wonders. Join us as we relive this extraordinary adventure.
Day 1: Arrival and Rest
Arriving in Abbotsford in the evening, we picked up our rental vehicle and drove to Surrey to stay at my cousin’s place for the night. After a long day of traveling, we needed some rest to prepare for the adventures ahead.
Day 2: Victoria’s Charm and Butchart Gardens
Ferry to Victoria
Starting our day early, we made our way to the ferry terminal to board a ferry to Victoria. The car queues were long but impressively organized. While waiting, we grabbed a cup of coffee at the on-site Starbucks. Parking our car in the ferry, we enjoyed the ride across the water. Although the ferry’s restaurant tempted us, the prices were a bit steep, so we decided to wait for a meal later in the day.
Butchart Gardens: A Floral Paradise
Once in Victoria, we headed straight for the world-renowned Butchart Gardens. As we strolled through the beautifully manicured gardens, the peaceful atmosphere enveloped us. We spent a leisurely four hours wandering the grounds, admiring the Sunken Garden’s dramatic transformation from a limestone quarry to a lush oasis. Captivated by the vibrant Japanese Garden and its elegant bridges, we also marveled at the meticulously maintained flower beds throughout the Rose Garden.
Day 2: Exploring Vancouver
A Stroll Through Downtown
Returning to Vancouver, we spent the evening exploring the bustling downtown area. Our walk took us along Canada Place and towards the historic charm of Gastown. Before calling it a night, we decided to experience Flyover Canada, located near Canada Place.
Flyover Canada: A Soaring Adventure
Flyover Canada offered a thrilling 4D experience, immersing us in the country’s beauty. We virtually soared over stunning landscapes, feeling the wind in our hair. Exhausted but happy, we wrapped up our day and got some well-deserved rest.
Day 3: The Enchanting Joffre Lakes Park
Scenic Drive Along the Sea to Sky Highway
On our final day, we departed early and embarked on a picturesque drive along the Sea to Sky Highway, with Joffre Lakes Park as our destination. The winding roads led us through enchanting landscapes, complete with snow-capped mountains and breathtaking vistas.
Joffre Lakes Park: A Hiker’s Dream
Upon arrival, a foggy, misty atmosphere greeted us, lending an air of mystery to the surroundings. With fewer crowds than usual, we embarked on an amazing hike through the park. We discovered three lakes with crystal clear, icy blue water, each more stunning than the last.
The October weather added a crispness to the air, and the rough terrain provided an exhilarating challenge. Along the way, we encountered fascinating flora and fauna, and the sight of Matier Glacier, majestically looming above the lakes, left us awestruck.
Lunch Amidst Nature’s Splendor
Taking a break, we enjoyed our homemade pasta lunch while soaking in the stunning views. A friendly bird even joined us, sharing a bit of our meal. The serene beauty of the park and its picturesque lakes created a truly unforgettable experience.
Day 3: A Fond Farewell to British Columbia
After our hike, we returned to Vancouver, our hearts full of the day’s adventures. We decided to spend our final evening reminiscing about our experiences over a delicious meal at a local restaurant. As we shared stories and laughter, we realized just how magical our weekend trip to British Columbia had been.
From the captivating beauty of Butchart Gardens to the awe-inspiring landscapes of Joffre Lakes Park, we had made memories that would last a lifetime. As we departed for home the next day, we carried with us not only the warmth of family and the sights we had seen, but also a renewed sense of wonder and appreciation for the world around us.
So if you’re looking for a getaway that offers a mix of urban excitement and natural splendor, consider a weekend trip to British Columbia. With its enchanting gardens, vibrant city life, and serene lakes, it’s an experience that will leave you inspired and yearning for more.
