Our journey from the Lake District to York on the evening of Day 8 was smooth, setting us up for a good night’s rest in our cozy Airbnb. York welcomed us with open arms, offering a peaceful retreat in preparation for a day packed with exploration and discovery.
Morning in York and Finding Parking
The next morning in York began with the bright sunshing peering through our windows, indicating a great day for talking long walks. Our Airbnb hosts had graciously allowed us access to the kitchen, where we whipped up a quick breakfast to fuel our day. With our bags packed and spirits high, we checked out from our last Airbnb of the entire trip and set our sights on the city’s historic heart.
Navigating parking in York proved to be a challenge, with affordable spots in high demand. Our solution was the National Railway Museum‘s parking lot, offering a full day’s stay for just £5. Though a bit outside the city center, we embraced the opportunity for a leisurely 20-30 minute walk into York, eager to explore its streets on foot.
Exploring Museum Gardens and York Minster
Museum Gardens
Our first stop was the tranquil Museum Gardens, a verdant oasis nestled in the heart of York. As we wandered through these lush grounds, the morning light cast a serene glow over the ancient ruins and vibrant flora. The Gardens are not only a haven for relaxation but also a portal to the past, home to the evocative remnants of St. Mary’s Abbey, one of the most powerful Benedictine monasteries in England before its dissolution in the 16th century. The ruins, dating back to the 19th century, stand as silent witnesses to the rich tapestry of York’s Roman and medieval heritage.
Surrounding the ruins, the Gardens boast a variety of plant species, meticulously curated to offer visitors a year-round display of natural beauty. The botanical collection includes a range of both native and exotic plants, creating a tapestry of color and scent that enchants the senses. This peaceful stroll through the Museum Gardens, with its blend of historical intrigue and botanical beauty, was the perfect precursor to our encounter with York Minster.
A Sweet Pause at Brew & Brownie
En route to York Minster, the allure of freshly baked pastries from Brew and Brownie proved irresistible. Armed with brownies and coffee, we continued our exploration, the treats adding an extra layer of enjoyment to our walk.
The Iconic York Minster
A short walk from Brew and Brownie, we came across one of York’s most iconic landmarks. York Minster, a masterpiece of gothic architecture, stands as a testament to the city’s rich history and architectural grandeur. Dating back to the 13th century, it is one of the largest cathedrals in Northern Europe and a pivotal symbol of Christianity in England. Its intricate stained glass windows, towering spires, and the detailed stone work are not just reflective of religious significance but also of the artistic and engineering achievements of the medieval period.
As we approached, the Minster’s imposing structure and the exquisite craftsmanship of its facade left us in awe, reminding us of the centuries of history encapsulated within its walls. Our visit was not just a journey through a religious landmark, but a step back in time to marvel at one of the finest examples of medieval architecture.
Markets & Local Discoveries
The Shambles Market: A Blend of History and Magic
The Shambles Market, nestled within the heart of York, captivated us with its charming narrow streets and a history steeped in tales of the supernatural. This bustling marketplace, alive with the whispers of the past, provided an intriguing backdrop to our day. It’s a place where history and modernity collide, offering a unique shopping experience that feels like a journey through time.
As we meandered through the market, the rich tapestry of ghost stories associated with the area added an air of mystery to our exploration. Every corner seemed to hold secrets from centuries past, inviting us to imagine the lives of those who once walked these streets. While the allure of The York Ghost Merchants and its queue hinted at the city’s fascination with its spectral heritage, we chose to soak in the market’s vibrant atmosphere instead.
Among the standout experiences was stumbling upon a Harry Potter-themed store, which felt as if we had stepped straight into the pages of J.K. Rowling’s beloved series. The store was a treasure trove of memorabilia and collectibles, turning a simple shopping trip into an enchanting adventure. It was more than just a store; it was a homage to the wizarding world, complete with wands, robes, and potion bottles, each item inviting us to let our imaginations run wild.
The Shambles truly offered something magical, blending the historical with the fantastical. From the cobbled streets that echoed with tales of old to the nooks and crannies filled with curiosities and crafts, it was a highlight of our visit to York. The market wasn’t just a place to shop; it was a window into the city’s soul, showcasing its rich history, its love for stories, and its ability to enchant visitors with its unique charm.
Lunch and Local Merchants
As the day progressed and our hunger grew, we found ourselves drawn to one of York’s local markets, a bustling hub of activity and flavors. Among the array of food stalls, we chose good ol’ burgers. We wanted to keep it simple while watching our budget and it was perfect for us at that moment. The food portion was good enough and it was delicious.
After satiating our appetites, our curiosity led us to another part of the market known for its artisanal goods. This small yet vibrant section was a treasure trove of craftsmanship, showcasing the talents of local artisans. Among the various offerings, a stall featuring exquisite glasswork stood out. The artisan, with skilled hands and a passion for her craft, displayed a collection of glasswork candle holders. The play of light through the colorful glass was mesmerizing, turning each candle holder into a piece of art.
We were drawn to one candle holder in particular, its hues and design speaking to us. Purchasing it felt like taking a piece of York’s artisan spirit with us, a unique souvenir that would remind us of this day and the market’s lively atmosphere.
Clifford’s Tower: A Historic Lookout
Our York adventure continued with a visit to Clifford’s Tower, a significant piece of the city’s medieval history. With our English Heritage pass in hand, we gained free entry, feeling a bit like we were stepping into a chapter of a history book. The tower has stood witness to some of York’s most tumultuous events. As we made our way to the top, we saw a 360-degree view of York. Below us, the city unfolded in a blend of ancient structures and modern life, a living history lesson on the evolution of this historic city. It was fascinating to imagine the tower in its prime, overseeing the medieval city and serving as a fortress against invaders.
National Railway Museum: Tracks Through Time
The day’s exploration ended on a high note at the National Railway Museum, where the story of Britain’s railways is told through an impressive collection of engines, carriages, and memorabilia. Admission to the museum is free, but you still have to register your visit by providing an arrival time. The museum was a treasure trove, highlighting the golden age of steam, the elegance of rail travel, and the technological advancements that shaped modern Britain.
Walking through the museum, we were struck by the sheer size of the locomotives and the intricate details of the royal carriages. The cool air inside was a pleasant break from the outdoor heat, giving us the chance to explore at our leisure. Seeing the trains up close, including the opportunity to step aboard some of the carriages, brought the history of rail travel to life. It was an insightful journey through the innovations and achievements of the railway system.
